Monty and the Witches Lair - A poem for Halloween

I have a Halloween tale that I just have to tell

It’s creepy and spooky and it may make you yell

So, sit down, gather round and my story I’ll share

Let me tell you about my visit to the Witches Lair

Now I’m pretty brave – there’s not much I fear

But I do get quite nervous this time of the year

The houses near me are decorated to be scary

As we pass on our walks it does make me wary

One in particular is a spine-tingling dwelling

What lurks in the house? There’s no way of telling

The gate creaks in the wind, shadows dance in the trees

And a skeleton swings in the cold evening breeze.

On the path to the house there are vampires and ghosts

Out of all of the places this one scares me the most

On the front door is a sign ‘Mortals all please beware’

Only the bravest of souls survive the Witches Lair’

Me mini hooman Pipsqueak doesn’t like Halloween

I think it’s because of all the things that she’s seen

Those carved pumpkins look evil and those spiders do too

And those vampires you walk past suddenly go BOO!

But this last day of October she wanted to go see

All the houses dressed up – So I said ‘Come with me’

I’d make sure she was safe as she went door to door

Maybe help collect Candy with a newfydoof paw

On that cold autumn night we got ready to go

As the sun disappeared the wind started to blow

We set out on our tour of the ghoulish abodes

No shortage of sweeties - Pipsqueak got loads

I tried to be brave, there was nothing to fear

I kept whispering that in me tiny friends’ ear

She was enjoying the evening, it was all going fine

But we had to head back now, cos it was home time

As we walked down the street ‘The House’ loomed up ahead

That one spooky place that filled me with dread

When we got to the garden Pippa opened the gate

I wanted to block her but I got there too late

She went straight up the path, how could she dare?

My mini hooman was heading into the Witches Lair

I had to go too, to stay would be neglect

I’d made a newfydoof vow to serve and protect

We passed through the trees, the house came into view

Pippa kept going on, nothing that I could do

Past the skeleton swinging and the vampire grave

As the zombie in cage gave a ‘please save me’ wave

Bats hung from the roof, were they real or fake?

I crept very slowly in case they should wake

At the door now and Pippa had rung on the bell

Which instead of ding-dong made a hideous yell

Suddenly the door creaked and I wanted to run

But me small hooman toddler seemed to think this was fun

She peered through the opening with not even a care

Did she not know the danger of the Witches’ Lair?

There she stood in the door with warts on her nose

Dressed from head down to foot in creepy black clothes

She carried a broomstick and wore a big pointy hat

And dragging behind her was a zombie black cat

She cackled and squawked as she emerged from the dark

I jumped in front of the pipsqueak and did me big bark

Though me knees were a knocking and me fur stood on end

My job here was simple - protect me teeny young friend

The witch looked down at me and in a voice loud and shrilly

Said ‘It’s only me Monty now stop being silly’

From behind came a voice excited and sweet

Happy Halloween Nanny, it’s me - Trick or treat!

So me mum dresses up at this house every year

But I didn’t know that there was nothing to fear

Keeping all that a secret was a little bit mean

But I guess I forgive her – Happy Halloween
